The End by Lemony Snicket

There are so many reviews out there for this book (and most of them are probably better written than mine could ever be) -- I'm just going to say that I enjoyed it more than I expected to, having read some bad reviews... and let you all read some of the reviews for yourselves!

New York Times
Quad Cities Times
Big A little A (and daughter)

Hmmm... My question to you is: Do you think that a 30-year-old father would enjoy this series of books? I very much enjoyed the Harry Potter series (so far), so I'm thinking of checking them out... what do you advise?

Since you're so in to books, have you ever read the Mars Trilogy, by Kim Stanley Robinson? It consists of "Red Mars," "Green Mars," and "Blue Mars." SIMPLY AWESOME!!!

Thanks for commenting!

You might enjoy them -- I'd recommend definitely starting from the beginning, and really, the first one is pretty short, so if you didn't like them, it wouldn't be as if you had wasted too much time on them. (And you can always find them at a library)

They are very different from the Harry Potter series -- even though they always appear on those "what to read while you're waiting for the next HP book" lists. I personally think they are wonderfully clever, and really, a lot of the literary and cultural allusions would go right over the heads of the children they are intended for. (So 30 definitely isn't too old to enjoy them!)

Well, this is probably longer than the blog entry itself -- but also... no I haven't read the Mars Trilogy, but I'll have to look them up and add them to my ever-growing list of books to read.
